What
is Rayon?
Rayon is probably the most misunderstood of all fibers. Rayon is both not
synthetic and a natural fiber. Rayon is formed by regenerating natural
materials into a usable form. Rayon has often been used in low-end, poorly
constructed garments because it is an inexpensive fiber. This destroyed the
fibers reputation. The two major types of rayon, regular viscose and high
wet modulus, have created more confusion and contributed to improper care
because
customers didn't know that the two needs different style of caring.
Rayon is moisture
absorbent, breathable, comfortable to wear, and easily dyed in vivid colors.
Rayon is comfortable, soft to the skin, and has moderate dry strength and
abrasion resistance. Rayon withstands ironing temperatures slightly less
than those of cotton. It may be attacked by silverfish and termites, but
generally resists insect damage. It will mildew, but that generally is not a
problem.
Rayon fibers and fabrics made from them have many desirable properties.
However, consumers sometimes expect performance characteristics beyond those
for which rayon fibers were designed. Rayon looks like wool, silk, cotton,
or linen and is a manufactured fiber like polyester, but this does not mean
it has the quality of the fibers and has the same properties or care
requirements of these fibers. Rayon is a unique fiber. Consider each garment
made from rayon individually when determining use and care practices.
