About Brunton |
|
With a century of innovation,
Brunton is always in the minds of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals
worldwide. Take a look at how one man made practicality and ingenuity the
recipe for success. The Philosophy After a century of innovation, some of the best things have remained the same. For Brunton, headquartered in the high plains of the Northern Rockies, practicality and ingenuity still provide the recipe for success. "The Brunton", as our 100+ year-old cornerstone product is affectionately called by the thousands of loyal clients who use it today, is still hand-made at the factory in Riverton, Wyoming. Committing this same personal attention throughout our product line, we have added technologically advanced optical instruments, global positioning systems, portable power products, high performance cook stoves, educational kits and dealer support displays. This unmistakable variety, affordability and quality keeps Brunton's name in the minds of outdoor enthusiasts and professionals worldwide, extending our heritage and tradition for excellence into the new millennium. The Brunton company's commitment to innovation proves that over a century after our founder first changed his world, this company that bears his name is still looking for new ways to explore and improve our own. The Story More than 100 years ago, David William Brunton took the initiative to change his world. Hauling heavy surveying equipment into the field day after day, the young engineer sweated through his jobs in the grimy boom towns of Leadville and Aspen, Colorado. The Canadian-born mine manager recognized the need for something simpler and smaller, an item that would be able to fit in his vest pocket, but would also be as rugged as the country that surrounded him. Brunton's dream materialized in the form of the pocket transit--a hand held surveying compass that could also measure horizontal angles. After making a half-dozen prototypes, Brunton sketched a design and contracted with William Ainsworth, a respected watchmaker, to build it. Brunton was awarded U.S. Patent No. 526,021 on September 18, 1894 for the Pocket Transit and Ainsworth, now relocated in Denver, founded the Ainsworth Gold Scale Company and began manufacturing it. By 1899, more than 200 transits were in daily use. In 1929, the number had skyrocketed to 30,000 and was approaching 100,000 by 1960. Over the years, Brunton kept improving his transit and was awarded additional patents for each innovation until his death in 1927. In 1972, a small group of Riverton, Wyoming businessmen combined their resources and purchased the product line surrounding the Brunton Transit from Ainsworth. With this purchase they became the exclusive manufacturer for products bearing the Brunton name. Now, decades later, Brunton products remain faithful to the quality and pride that started it all. Our Swedish Connection In February 1996, Brunton took a giant step into the future when we were acquired by Silva Production A.B. of Sweden, the world's leading compass manufacturer. Silva Production A.B. was created in the early 1930's by the formation of a partnership between Gunnar Tillander, the inventor of the liquid dampened orienteering compass and the Kjellstrom brothers, Bjorn and Alvar, who were champion orienteers and marketing experts. Their combined skills founded the compass business that would lead the world in wilderness navigation. Tillander's revolutionary design was fast and simple to use. Its reliability and the ease with which it could be mastered, made it the preferred compass among orienteers, professionals and outdoors enthusiasts alike. Silva Production A.B.'s solid reputation for innovative design, the use of the highest quality materials and technologically advanced production techniques, position Brunton with its Nexus compass product line as the brand leader for the 21st Century. |
